Formed in 2006, Héliodrome is composed
of Khyro, from the Atach Tatuq collective and y.p.l.,
the mastermind behind the Rosemo(u)nt Antiquartet. The duo quickly
bonded over their love of free-jazz, folk, hip hop, experimental music and
religious studies. Being inspired by all musical eras since the early 1900s,
their sound has a distinct timelessness to it.
Their debut record “La lumiere ordinaire du jour,” was produced and
recorded by Scott Da Ros in the spaacemoon snowcaat studio
in Montreal, where he brought to the music his own creative input, altering the
jazz instrumentals into a cross between hip-hop and....well we don't really know.
Scott mixed the record with Vid Cousins (who has worked with
Amon Tobin and Squarepusher), allowing Cousins to add his own personal touch
brought the music to yet another level. These collaborations have made “La
lumiere ordinaire du jour” a unique and mind altering work of art.
Guests on this record include long time collaborator Eric Gingras (Pas
Chic Chic / Kesdjan Ensemble / Rap Maudit) performing standup bass on Entre
Sol et Terre and Le Premier Matin. Khyro met cellist and recording artist Melanie
Auclair (Magnolia) while performing at Montreal Musical Improvisation
League and knew she would be perfect for the album – look for her adding
her beautiful improvised melodies to Le jeu de l'ange. Having performed
with Khyro on the Kesdjan Ensemble, Olivier Borzeix (Ste-Sophie,
Heavy Eye of the Sun) and percussionist Will Eizlini
(Shalabi Effect) make their mark on Jour d'avril.
Contirbuting vocally on Le jeu de l'ange is Palestinian rapper Boikutt, from
the rap group Ramallah Underground. Boikutt and Khyro performed
together once before at the Another Voice Festival in Ramallah. À l'ombre
des deux tours features a collaboration with Bleubird, who
Khyro insisted be a part of this album, even though he was living in Berlin at
the time. These likeminded artists have an energy and spark together that is
undeniable.
Always up for a challenge, Héliodrome have restrained themselves to the
use of only four instruments per song, creating an intense lo-fi esthetic. Their
music breeds a dark and gloomy humanity, the one living inside everyone trying
to break free of psychological limitations whilst struggling with the parts lurking
in the shadows. Deeply “Lynchean” in their aesthetic; tiptoeing the
fine lines between dreams and reality and allowing subconscious symbols to emerge
in words and music, Héliodrome invite you into their world of experimental
hip hop one song at a time.
